OUR HOUSE ON THOMPSON STREET ....
CONTINUED FROM YESTERDAY....
I remember working at "Boots" Heatwole's Texaco service station in Dayton.
It was located just about 4 buildings down from what was Roth's Grocery going
north on main street and to the left. Today the grocery, although in the same
place, is run by an Asian Indian couple. The service station is now a residence,
but there is another service station now on the corner of main street and the
street that runs west past Dayton Elementary School. The station is on the
northwest corner, and a cannon and a plaque just a few steps southeast of the
station and on the same corner, commemorate a Civil War soldier who convinced
his commander not to burn the town of Dayton.
I probably had to be 16 (1958) to work and maybe needed a permit. It was a full
service gas station, I pumped gas, washed windshields and checked under
the hood if the customer said "yes" after I said "would you like me to check the
oil, sir or mam." And customers always paid by check or cash. I believe I
worked mostly Saturdays during the school year, but maybe full time during the
Summer when school was out. I know one thing, I worked my butt off especially
on Saturdays. Customers, some of them regulars, came to the station to get their
cars washed or washed and waxed.
And for all that work I did for "Boots" he paid to me....

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has been in the news a lot during the last month
or so. The Sioux Tribe along with others who are loyal to their cause are
protesting the nearness to their reservation of a proposed $3.7 billion Dakota
Access pipeline. The proposed pipeline comes within a half-mile of the Sioux
reservation and has drawn people from all over the world to join their protests.
The latest: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in a statement said they
would not allow the pipeline to run under a dammed section of the Missouri
River. An alternate route will need to be found and, thus, the Sioux Tribe have
won a major victory for now.
The chief executive of Energy Transfer Partners has said the company is not
willing to reroute the pipeline whose goal is to transport around 550,000 barrels
of oil a day from the oil fields of western North Dakota to a terminal in Illinois.
We'll see what happens.

Baby Boomers are those born between 1945 and 1965. This does not include me
because I was born in 1942.
The article says 1 in 30 of these Baby Boomers has Hepatitis C and don't even
know it. Five facts:
1. 75% of the people in the US who have Hepatitis C are Baby Boomers and most
don't even know they have it.
2. Hepatitis C is a virus that infects the liver. If not treated, Hepatitis C can
lead to liver damage and liver cancer.
3. More Americans die each year from Hepatitis C than from HIV.
4. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends that all Baby Boomers
get tested for Hepatitis C.
5. If you have Hepatitis C it can be cured.
Factors that increase your risk for Hepatitis C:
1. Baby Boomers born between 1945 to 1965.
2. Received blood transfusions, organ transplant or kidney dialysis
before 1992.
3. Tattoos or body piercings with unsterilized instruments.
4. Sharing needles or straws for recreational drug use (even just one time).
5. Accidental needle sticks (most common in healthcare professionals).
6. Vietnam-era veteran.
7. Being born to a mother with Hepatitis C.
They go on to say it is a hidden virus, not talked about much and you may have
never heard of it. It is not tested in routine blood tests.
I am one of those who is older that a Baby Boomer and one of the 25% who may
have this so-called hidden virus. I will ask my doctor, Dr. Kwok, for the test for
Hepatitis C on my next visit.
I would advise you to do the same.

I went out to the garage (1:45 AM 12/5/2016 EDT) to make my 1st pot of coffee.
Temperature is the same as it has always been for the last week or so. 40°. And
with the wind at a brisk pace from the south, it feels near freezing. 32°. The
humidity is 72% and with the dew point calculator at http://www.dpcalc.org/,
the dew point reading is 32%.
"Fishy, fishy in the brook (stream), Father caught him with a hook, Mother fried
him in a pan and I ate him like a man." I remember Mother reading this to us,
but I don't know if I got it right or not? And the fish were not sardines either, I
believe they only live in salt water.
Just made (2:51 AM 12/5/2016 EDT) my special of the house breakfast sandwich
of the day. I am making it in the house too. With freezing temperatures coming,
I do not want the canned fish to be damaged by the cold. I had my favorite again.
King Oscar with maybe 14 sardines in this can today when yesterday there were
more. On the package it says 12 to 22 fish. I always pull the tab back a bit and
tip the can to my mouth to drink that liquid of the gods (extra virgin olive oil)
from the can.
